
Visit the unmissable Saint-Sernin Basilica
Ten minutes' walk from the Hôtel de France, the Saint-Sernin basilica is a must see in Toulouse’s heritage. A true jewel of Romanesque art, it is one of the largest preserved basilicas in Europe and an emblematic place on the Camino de Santiago.
Approaching by the rue du Taur, the eye is immediately attracted by its impressive octagonal bell tower that dominates the Pink City. Built between the eleventh and thirteenth century, it is built in brick and stone, typical of Toulouse architecture. Its harmony and sobriety make it a recognized masterpiece, inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage list.
Entering inside, we discover a majestic nave bathed in soft light filtering through the stained glass windows. The size of the building impresses with its five naves and ambulatory to admire magnificent chapels. One of the treasures of the basilica is its high altar in carved marble, a precious work dating from the eleventh century.
But the real spiritual heart of the place is in its crypt, where the relics of saint Saturnin rest, first bishop of Toulouse and martyr of the III century. An atmosphere of history and recollection reigns, offering visitors a moment out of time.
